The view from the third floor of the Dana Engineering Building at Bucknell University just got a little greener. About 150 trays of soil and sedum - a variety of hardy, flowering plants - were installed Thursday on a 600-square-foot portion of the roof on the east side of campus, laying the groundwork for the University's first "green roof."

Resident Student Green Eagles are paid, part-time student workers hired to implement sustainable practices on campus and to conduct outreach to the university community as a whole, with an emphasis on the residence halls where they reside. The state of Illinois, Chicago Public Schools and Harris N.A. have made the list of the nation's top 50 green power partners using the most renewable electricity, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced recently. Of the three, the state of Illinois came in highest on the list at number 23. The state purchases 176 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, about 33 percent of its purchased electricity use.

The U.S. Congress released a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report yesterday that addresses the management and trade of hazardous electronic wastes. The report correctly urges the EPA to deal with the massive flows of U.S. e-waste. However, according to the Electronic TakeBack Coalition, it misses the mark in recommending that the EPA put forward legislation that would ratify the Basel Convention, without first prohibiting the export of hazardous electronic waste to developing countries.
